Cultural Revolution:  Meeting                     

September 18, 2003

 

Following Meeting on April 7, 2003:

-        April 2003: Richard drafted letter outlining that we are going ahead with the project and forwarded to Shen Kuiyi, Francesca Dal Lago, Paul Clark, and Julia Andrews to see whether their papers are still available – see responses below:

 

Papers to be included in the publication:

-        Sheng Tian Zheng

-        Britta Erickson – revised paper received on e-mail, December 16, 2002

-        Shen Kuiyi  -- response June 8, 2003 – will revise paper – paper not received

-        Francesca Dal Lago – response May 24, 2003 – will revise paper, but waiting for editor’s suggestions – paper not received

-        Ralph Crozier – paper on disk supplied by Naomi, February 2003

-        Gu Xiong – revised paper received on e-mail, December 31, 2002

-        Bai Di – revised paper received on e-mail, December 13, 2002

-        Paul Clark – received e-mail May 30, 2003 – indicating that he will revise paper and submit in July 2003 – paper not received

-        Julia Andrews (we have Julia’s paper) – on disk Naomi supplied

 

Papers still under consideration:

-        Yan Shan Chen

-        Wang Mingxian

-        Sheng to contact Yan Shan Chen and Wang Mingxian to inquire about revising their papers for inclusion in the publication

Introduction:

-        historical introduction to the Cultural Revolution, art, treatment of artists

 

-        another chapter in second section on exhibition -- Scott to contribute a paper to complement the other papers -- or should this come at the beginning of the book?

 

Possible Organization of Texts:  Two Parts

  1. art and artists of the Cultural Revolution

    1. Julia Andrews, Yan Shanchen, Zheng Shengtian, Wang Mingxian, Shen Kuiyi, Gu Xiong
  2.  papers that take a contemporary perspective to reevaluate, reinterpret, and reclaim the art in the current context

    1. Ralph Croizier, Britta Erickson, Francesca Dal Lago

 

Where do we include papers about Model Opera?

-        Paul Clark, Bai Di

 

Conclusion: (Sheng, Scott, Richard – possibly Ralph on post-CR images)

-        comments on the place of the Cultural Revolution in public memory in China

-        timelines of the exhibition and questions raise
